Cambridge United FC Futsal first to take points off current FA Futsal National Super League leaders Reading Escolla Futsal Club
Cambridge United FC Futsal welcomed current FA Futsal National Super League leaders Reading Escolla Futsal Club to the University of Cambridge Sports Centre on Sunday for an early evening kick off. It was also the match chosen by The Daily Futsal for live streaming which was to prove to be a great choice.
Reading Escolla travelled to Cambridge with an impressive 100% record of 8 wins out of 8 and a +36 goal difference. But Cambridge United FC Futsal themselves came into the game on the back of three successive wins.
United started slowly however and soon found themselves 2-0 down to a dominant Reading which silenced the boisterous home support. It looked like it was going to be another routine win for a very strong and impressive Reading outfit until Cambridge youngster Monty Bouttell pulled one back for the Us midway through the first half. However, Reading struck back to restore their two goal cushion and went into the break 3-1 up.
Whatever United Coach Luis Mendonca said to the players at the break worked wonders as the Us took control of the second half with great intensity and discipline which seemed to take Reading somewhat by surprise and were duly rewarded with 3 quick fire goals, from Alberto Morcillo (2) and Inaki Prado. Cambridge all of a sudden were 4-3 to the good with 7 minutes remaining and Reading were clearly rattled. Cambridge defended stoutly with keeper Jose Lima having another tremendous game in goal but were finally undone by a well worked Reading equaliser. Despite a Reading sending off at the death, Cambridge couldn’t take advantage of the extra man for the last few seconds and the match finished all square at 4-4.
Cambridge would probably have taken the draw before the game but had the chances to win it and were ultimately disappointed not to do so. Reading Escolla dropped their first points of the season in the surprise result of the weekend’s fixtures.
Now undefeated in four games, this deserved result takes an improving Cambridge United above Manchester and up to 6th place in the FA Futsal National Super League.
Cambridge United now have a 2 week Christmas break before they are next in action with the double header with Tranmere Rovers FC Futsal. The Us travel to Prenton Park on Sunday 14th January before the return fixture at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre on the following Sunday 21st January.
