Cambridge United FC Futsal continue their impressive FA Futsal National Super League unbeaten run with another win.
Unbeaten in 7 matches, Cambridge United FC Futsal welcomed York City Futsal Club to the University of Cambridge Sports Centre on Sunday in the FA Futsal National Super League.
The two sides last met two seasons ago in the Play-Off Finals which Cambridge very narrowly won in what proved to be a fractious encounter to secure promotion to the Super League, so it was sure to be another close fought match but Luis Mendonca had his troops well prepared for this fixture to maintain United’s top 4 challenge and aspirations.
The Us were full of confidence after their strong showing last Sunday in the 5-5 draw away to 2nd place Birmingham. United were still depleted through injury and suspension so were without Inaki Prado, Chema Cruz, Pedro Pereira, Justo Lopez, Tim Henery and Alberto Morcillo but Toby Hardwick and Paulo Rodrigues were back in the match day squad and Lino Cebey returned in goal.
Cambridge started the game well, controlling early possession and defending with discipline when required to do so, and were rewarded 5 minutes into the first half when Vitalii Burnus did well to win back possession and tee up Monty Bouttell to slot it coolly past the York keeper to make it 1-0 to the Us.
It stayed this way until late in the first half when a brilliant Paulo Rodrigues effort cannoned off the bar but fell to Angel Martinez who made no mistake with the follow up to make it a well deserved 2-0 to the Us which is how it stayed until half time.
York City came out fighting in the second half and dominated possession but Cambridge continued to repel them with Us stopper Lino Cebey having a particularly fine game in goal pulling off some outstanding saves to frustrate the visitors.
This pattern of play continued until mid way through the second half when Us youngster Monty Bouttell received the ball in the centre of the court, drove into the space that opened up in front of him and made no mistake with an excellent finish into the far corner for his second of the game to make it 3-0 to the Us.
United saw out the remainder of the game despite both teams having chances and it finished 3-0 to the Us much to the delight of the noisy home crowd.
This win sees Cambridge United FC Futsal extend their unbeaten run to 8 games now which keeps the ever improving and maturing Us in 5th place in the FA Futsal National Super League but now just 2 points off 4th place London City.
Coach Luis Mendonca commented immediately after the game that he was pleased with his team’s performance, and particularly that of keeper Lino Cebey, against a good experienced York City side, delighted with the 3 points and to maintain the current important unbeaten run but was now looking ahead to the next game.
Cambridge United FC Futsal are next in action on Sunday 11th February in a 2:30pm kick off at home again at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre against FC Salisbury United Futsal Club who won the first encounter between the two sides at the start of the season so the Us will be looking to improve on that disappointing result.
