Cambridge United FC Futsal well beaten by FA Futsal National Super League leaders.

Cambridge United FC Futsal travelled to High Wycombe to face north to face surprise FA Futsal National Super League leaders Reading Escolla.

United were full of confidence on the back of the previous weekend’s convincing 6 – 0 win over York and knowing that the deserved 3 – 3 draw with Reading Escolla at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre earlier in the season had been the first points dropped by the league leaders this season.

Cambridge were also still vying for 3rd place with Birmingham and knew that a result would be important in this quest.

However, Reading Escolla knew that the fate of the title (and a place in next season’s UEFA Futsal Champions League) lay in their hands and if they won all of their remaining games, favourites London Helvecia, hot on their heels, couldn’t catch them.

Reading made the most of home advantage playing in front of their noisy and boisterous fans and caught Cambridge cold going a goal up within 90 seconds.

United steadied themselves and stayed in the game despite Reading’s dominance.

However, midway through the first half Reading added two more in quick succession due to unusually lapse Cambridge defending.

Cambridge did have the chance to get back in the game towards the end of the first half through a penalty but United couldn’t take advantage and went into the break 3-0 down.

Reading Escolla continued the second half as the first in front of their celebratory fans who were enjoying the occasion.

Reading added 4 more goals in the second half to make it 7-0. A deserved win for a very strong Reading Escolla side and a lesson for a slightly off colour United.

Despite the disappointing loss, Cambridge United FC Futsal later discovered that Birmingham had also somewhat surprisingly lost at Loughborough on the same day so 3rd place in the FA National Futsal Super League was still a possibility for the Us. Birmingham still trailed United by a point, with a game in hand but themselves faced Reading Escolla next.

United’s last fixture of the season sees them travel to Loughborough in what is always a competitive fixture.
